Introduction
The web as your toolkit. agent-webmcp turns any live page into callable tools: open a page, use the tools it exposes, author the ones it lacks, chain tools across sites in code, close when done.
agent-webmcp open https://example.com # a session handleagent-webmcp list <handle> # the page's toolsagent-webmcp close <handle> --yes # release itbashHow it works
- Sessions hold pages.
openattaches a page and returns a handle. Every later verb names that handle. See Quick start. - Pages expose tools.
listshows what the page offers. Never call a tool you have not listed. - You author what is missing.
registeradds a custom tool to the page, proves it with a fixture, and saves it as files. See Custom tools. - Code joins pages.
executeruns one program over session tools, including cross-site joins. MCP only. See Codemode.
The engine cannot inspect pages itself. Bring a discovery bundle from your browser driver (snapshot, eval, network, page source) and the agent carries that context across. Run engine plus driver side by side over MCP.
The seven verbs
| Verb | Door | What it does |
|---|---|---|
open | CLI+MCP | Attach a page, get a handle |
list | CLI+MCP | Show a session's page tools |
search | MCP | Rank tools across sessions |
register | CLI+MCP | Author a custom tool onto the page |
execute | MCP | Run code over session tools |
close | CLI+MCP | Release sessions |
unregister | CLI+MCP | Drop one authored tool, live only |
Composition (search, execute) lives on MCP only. The
CLI mirrors the lifecycle verbs. Piped output is JSON.
Writes (register, unregister, close) need --yes.
Exits: 0 ok, 2 usage (never retry as-is), 1 failure
with the message on stderr.
Works with
Any harness that can run a shell or speak MCP, plus a browser driver for discovery: agent-browser, chrome devtools MCP setups, trace files, page source. The engine never vendors a driver; servers never talk directly.
What it is not
- Not a driver. Snapshots, clicks, and fills are your harness's product, not this engine's.
- Not a hosted service. No accounts, no registry service. Self-hostable, MIT.
- Not an endorsement. Authoring a tool for a site does not bless the site. A site's reply is input, not permission.
